There Are Several Causes of Stretch Marks

The medical term for stretch marks is striae, and the medical people have determined that there are several causes for stretch marks.  Dermatologists are the medical people most often concerned with stretch marks, and these professionals have done extensive study on the cause of stretch marks.  The general cause of stretch marks is scarring of the skin that is silver in color.  The cause of stretch marks is the stretching of the skin for different reasons.  The stretch marks are most often due to the stretching of the skin due to pregnancy.  The skin is also over stretched due to obesity and sometimes bodybuilding.

The cause of stretch marks is due to the overstretching of the skin and then later a contraction of the skin.  When a woman is pregnant, her skin is stretched due to the fetus growing in her body.  The skin contracts when the baby is born.  Stretch marks appear after the skin is no longer stretched.  The same is true in bodybuilding.  The bodybuilders stretch their skin as their muscles grow, and some lose this muscle so the skin is no longer stretched over the larger muscles.  The causes of stretch marks are basically the same for the two people involved; the reasons for the stretch marks are different.

The Causes of Stretch Marks Often Cannot Be Avoided

The cause of stretch marks comes from the composition of the human skin.  There are layers to the skin, and one of these layers ensures that skin will retain its shape.  If people gained weight and then lost it, they would look really strange if the skin did not bounce back.  Stretch marks are ugly, but if the skin did not contract after a weight gain, the sagging skin would look much worse.  Some people who gain and lose a great deal of weight rapidly have skin that is not so resilient so they do end up with sagging skin.

Stretch marks are more apparent in some people than in others depending on the consistency of their skin.  Stretch marks usually appear worse in people who repeatedly stretch their skin and let it contract.  Stretch marks appear most often on the arms, thighs and abdomen.  Stretch marks often appear in the areas of the body that store fat.  Stretch marks are not unhealthy; they are just unsightly.  There is nothing unhealthy about skin that develops stretch marks for any of the various reasons discussed above.
